Walk the remarkably preserved streets of an ancient Roman city, frozen in time by the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Explore houses, temples, theaters, and see haunting plaster casts. The nearby Herculaneum is smaller but even better preserved. Both are easily accessible via the Circumvesuviana train line.

Hike to the crater of the legendary (and still active) volcano that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. The trail is manageable, and the reward is twofold: peering into the vast, steaming crater and enjoying one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the entire Bay of Napoli. It's accessible by bus from Pompeii or Ercolano station.
